Mary’s Meals is a global movement that sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities, where hunger and poverty stop children from gaining an education.
Its idea is a simple one that works. The Scottish-based charity provides one daily meal in a place of education in order to attract chronically poor children into a classroom where they can gain an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty.
Mary’s Meals began by feeding 200 children in Malawi. Today, it feeds over 600,000 hungry children in 16 different countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and South America.
The charity consists of, respects, and reaches out to people of all faiths and none.
The average worldwide cost for the charity to feed a child for a whole school year is just $16.80. The charity works hard to keep its running costs low and to ensure that at least 93 cents of every $1 donated goes on its charitable work. This is only made possible as much of its work is done by volunteers. Wherever possible, Mary’s Meals uses locally grown food to support the local economy.
Mary’s Meals is a US tax exempt charity which has an office in New Jersey. Its founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow was named one of 2010’s Top Ten Heroes by broadcaster CNN.
The charity’s vision is that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education.
