Press release

NY Giants Kicker Lawrence Tynes to Serve as Grand Marshal for 10th Annual NYC Tartan Day Parade on April 5, 2008

January 22, 2007 – New York, NY

Lawrence Tynes, kicker for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL), will participate as Grand Marshal for New York City’s Tenth Annual Tartan Day Parade. Tynes will swap the Giants uniform for his kilt as he kicks off the Parade, leading more than 2,000 bagpipers, clans and Scottish enthusiasts up Sixth Avenue through Rockefeller Center on April 5, 2008. The Parade, sponsored by the National Tartan Day Committee, is the largest Scottish Parade in North America and features the highest concentration of bagpipers in any New York parade as well as 101 West Highland and Scottish Terriers, the largest contingent in any parade.

Tynes, born in Greenock, Scotland, moved to the United States with his family as a ten-year old in 1989. His soccer kicking skills were discovered and leveraged to football as he went on to play for Troy State University. Today, Tynes is the starting kicker for the NFC Champion New York Giants and the only Scottish-born player in the NFL.

“We’re thrilled that Mr. Tynes accepted our invitation to join us as Grand Marshal,” stated committee Board member Edward Collins. “The role of Grand Marshal is a prestigious position reserved for distinguished individuals of Scottish heritage. Given Mr. Tynes’ background and his many accomplishments, he was the natural choice for this position, which takes place in one of the world’s greatest professional sports capitals.”

Tynes added, “I enthusiastically look forward to participating in the 10th Annual Parade. Having been born in Scotland as well as being a proud American, this parade has special meaning to me and I look forward to sharing a great day with everyone.”

The parade route is on Sixth Avenue, from West 45 to West 58 Streets.

About Tartan Day
The US Senate, in 1998, designated April 6th as “Tartan Day,” to celebrate the contributions to America by Scottish-Americans. The date is the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath (1320), one of the first documents in the world to declare a right to freedom. About the National Tartan Day New York Committee The Committee is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation organized under the laws of the State of New York. It was created in 2002 to organize New York City's Tartan Day Parade, help perpetuate Tartan Day and coordinate New York's Tartan Week activities. The Committee was founded by three New York-based Scottish-American organizations: Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York (founded 1756), New York Caledonian Club, 1856, and the American-Scottish Foundation (founded 1956). Three additional organizations, Clan Campbell Society, the New York Police Pipes and Drums, and the New York Tartan Army, have since joined the Committee.
