Mike Turpie , Scottish Artist and Piper has been combining his interests producing high quality pictures depicting the bagpipe in historical and contemporary settings.
A great love of the landscape and tradition of Scotland goes back to his family roots in the west highlands where his grandfather, John MacNaughton was also a piper.
Mike studied art at Dundee Art College specialising in painting and receiving many commendations. He progressed his piping through individual lessons in pibroch and was exposed to the competition scene through various pipe bands both in Scotland and abroad.
Recent projects include charity work raising funds for Down Syndromme, Scotland. This took the form of playing his bagpipes for an hour on top of the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, London as part of the “One and Other” art project.
Presently Mike is teaching bagpipe to youngsters individually and is co-ordinator and tutor to the newly formed Blairgowrie Junior Pipe Band. Mike is a playing member of the Blairgowrie and Rattray Pipe Band who will be a lead pipe band in the Perth Diamond Jubilee Parade.
Mike’s art is also to be found in numerous collections in Scotland and abroad and is currently represented by the Wiford Gallery in New Mexico.
